GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant developed by GitHub (owned by Microsoft) in partnership with OpenAI. It integrates directly into code editors and suggests code completions, generates entire functions from comments, and helps developers write code faster. Copilot was one of the first widely adopted AI tools in professional workflows and established the AI coding assistant category.
For software development teams, Copilot typically reduces coding time by 20–40% on routine tasks. Unlike Claude Code, it is designed for experienced developers rather than non-technical users.
