Dropbox MCP: connect Dropbox to Claude and ChatGPT

Ask Claude or ChatGPT to find last year’s supplier list, summarise the board deck in /Board/2026 or compare two versions of a contract template. The AI searches your Dropbox, reads Word, Excel and PowerPoint files as text and gives you the link. No downloading, no opening ten files to find the right one.

With Deployed OS everyone connects their own Dropbox login. The AI sees the files and team folders that person can open, nothing more. It can save a new text file when someone asks, and it never replaces, moves or deletes one.

In practice

What your team can do with Dropbox in Claude and ChatGPT

Sales

The latest deck, not the one from March

Find the newest customer deck or the case study for the right industry, read it and pull out what matters for today’s call. The link comes with it.
Projects

Notes saved where they belong

Read the brief and the latest status notes, then save a summary as a .md file in the same folder. A new file every time, so nothing existing is overwritten.
Finance

Read the spreadsheet without opening it

Ask what the Q3 budget file says about travel, or list the suppliers in the purchasing sheet with their payment terms. Excel files are read as text.
HR

Onboarding without the treasure hunt

New starters ask where the handbook is, what the expense policy says or how holiday requests work. The AI finds the file in the HR folder and answers from it.
Examples

Ask it like this

  • “Find the newest pitch deck for Acme AB and summarise it in five bullets.”

  • “What does the travel policy in /HR/Policies say about taking the train instead of flying?”

  • “List everything in /Clients/Acme that changed this month.”

  • “Open Budget 2027.xlsx and tell me what we planned for marketing in Q1.”

  • “Search our Dropbox for the signed NDA with Nordlys AB and give me the link.”

  • “Save these meeting notes as /Projects/Atlas/2026-10-03 kickoff.md.”

The connector

What the Dropbox MCP connector does today

  • Readsdropbox_search

Search your Dropbox, team folders included, by words in file and folder names, and in file contents where your Dropbox plan offers it. Can be limited to one folder.

  • Readsdropbox_list_folder

List what is in a folder, up to 200 files and folders a page, with name, path, size, last change and link.

  • Readsdropbox_read_file

Read one file as text: text files, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Paper docs and Google Docs. Other files, PDFs included, return their details and link. Long text is cut at 200 KB.

  • Writesdropbox_create_text_file

Save a new .txt, .md or .csv file with the text you confirmed. It never replaces a file: if the name is taken, Dropbox picks a free one. Nothing is shared and nobody is notified.

Security

Who sees what

Reads, plus one kind of write
The connector searches, lists and reads files and folders, team folders included. Text, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, Paper docs and Google Docs come back as text. Its only write is a new .txt, .md or .csv file. It never replaces, moves, deletes or shares anything.
Each person’s own Dropbox
Everyone connects their own Dropbox login, so the AI opens what that person can open. A folder they were never invited to stays invisible through the AI too.
You choose who gets it
Admins decide which groups get the Dropbox connector, and which of them may save files. Everyone else never sees it.
Every call logged
Every search, read and saved file is logged: who, which connector, when. Deployed OS shows reads and writes per connector and per person, and the log can be exported. Access is revoked centrally, including the day someone leaves.
Setup

Set up the Dropbox connector in three steps

01
An admin creates an app in the Dropbox App Console with scoped access to the full Dropbox, adds the redirect URI and the scopes we give you, and enables additional users. Your company owns the app, not us.
02
The admin adds the app’s App key and App secret to Deployed OS and chooses which groups get Dropbox.
03
Each person connects their own Dropbox account and starts asking. If your Dropbox team blocks third-party apps, a team admin allows this one first.

Dropbox’s own MCP server or Deployed OS?

Dropbox runs its own remote MCP server, in beta as of October 2026. It connects one person’s Dropbox to their assistant, and it is a good fit for an individual or a developer trying things out.

Deployed OS is built for the whole company. One connection for Dropbox and your other tools, each person’s own login, admins choosing which groups get what, and a log of every call. The same connection works in Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot, next to your company’s skills and guardrails.

Questions

Dropbox MCP: common questions

Yes. Dropbox has its own remote MCP server, in beta as of October 2026, which one person can connect to their assistant. Deployed OS gives the whole company one connection, with each person’s own login, access per group and a log of every call.

No. It reads files and folders, and the one thing it can write is a new text file (.txt, .md or .csv). That takes Edit access, and it only happens when you ask and confirm the path and text. It never replaces, moves, deletes or shares a file. If you want it to do more, we can extend it for you.

Yes. Deployed OS is your company’s own MCP, so one Dropbox connection works in ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot. Sales can ask in ChatGPT while finance asks in Claude, each with their own Dropbox login.

Not as text today. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, text files, Paper docs and Google Docs are read as text. A PDF or an image comes back with its name, size and link, and the AI says so instead of guessing what is in it.

Deployed is an EU company and fully GDPR compliant, and you choose where your data is stored, down to the city. Files are read from Dropbox when someone asks for them.

It depends on the size of your team. Get in touch and we will walk you through it.
